Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Jazzmaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A well-kept Pre-CBS example produced very early in ‘64 with a neck stamp and pickup dates from the previous year, this Jazzmaster is 100% original save for a Mastery bridge and additional grounding on the wiring harness.
Lightweight and lively at only 7lbs 10oz, this Jazzmaster is powerful, resonant, and extremely versatile, aligning with expectations for a guitar produced in Fender's golden age. The authoritative acoustic tone of the guitar translates faithfully through the original pair of (very early) gray bobbin pickups. The instrument has a particularly woody sound, with a bouncy sparkle and spank in the bridge position and a broad, textured neck pickup tone with significant breadth. The Rhythm Circuit on the lower body horn has a sound that's thick and sweet with a dry cut that retains clarity, well suited to a heavily overdriven tube amp or a vintage fuzz pedal. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Jazzmaster with 11-49 roundwound strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut with round shoulders in every register, quickly gaining additional heft and chunk further up the fretboard, with faintly rolled fretboard edges for added comfort. The profile depth measures .825" deep at the 1st fret, .905" at the 5th, and 1.005" at the 12th. The dark Brazilian rosewood fretboard has a 7 1/4” radius, with clay dot inlay and the original slender firewire. The frets have been leveled and crowned in the guitar’s lifetime, currently quite low yet fretting cleanly in every register, with just a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-5. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2" scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nut measures 1 5/8” in width. On the headstock, the spaghetti Jazzmaster waterslide decal is practically perfect, and the single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines function smoothly with clean plating. On the heel of the neck, the 4NOV63B stamp is very bold, translating to "4" (Jazzmaster model number), November, 1963. The factory "paint stick" markings are present in the neck pocket, indicative of an original finish, along with a factory black fiber neck shim.
All of the electronics function as intended, and the pots have just been given a thorough cleaning, turning smoothly and without static. The wiring harness has a couple additional ground wires added to ensure the lowest possible noise floor, and the Stackpole pots in the Lead Circuit date to the 8th and 10th weeks of '64. The two original gray bobbin pickups have their stock windings, and the bridge pickup bobbin is grease pencil dated to 5-22-63.
The original deep red tortoise nitrate tortoise pickguard has a glossy sheen, sitting quite flat with sparingly little shrinkage. The pickup covers and knobs show gentle yellowing and some greening of the text. The hardware has bright chrome plating, and the original vibrato tailpiece is an elegant design, responding to a light touch for quick semitone flutters, surfy dives and deeper bends.The bridge has been upgraded to a modern Mastery M1 for optimal stability, tonal transfer, and vibrato functionality.
The nitro lacquer three-tone Sunburst finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, with a broad and bold central red band. There's barely any finish fade when comparing the exposed finish and that which has been protected from UV light beneath the pickguard for over half a century. The back of the body has very faint, tight vertical lacquer checking, and there is an area of buckle rash through the finish on the back of the bass-side body horn. Cosmetic wear is otherwise limited to a number of minor marks from consistent use on the body as a whole, some light pick wear on the bass-side of the strum path, and a few small finish chips on the body perimeter. Palm wear through the gloss on the neck profile has left the maple with a smooth, satin-esque feel that is exceedingly comfortable to play.
The original smooth black tolex no-logo hardshell case is included, complete with functional latches and the original handle. A piece of foam has been added to the orange plush interior to replace a missing neck rest.
